Derrick Callender, 32, Killed in Senseless Car Accident

The incident began with a dispute in a liquor store and ended just after midnight in front of 666 East 233rd Street, near White Plains Road, in the Wakefield section.  Police responding to a call of a pedestrian struck found 32-year-old liquor store owner Derrick Callender, with trauma to his body.  He was rushed to Montefiore North Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigators determined that the victim was struck by a 1988 Toyota Sienna that was traveling eastbound on East 233nd Street at a high rate of speed and had jumped the curb. The occupants fled on foot, and police are searching for them.

Our law firm has represented many people struck by vehicles whose drivers leave the scene of the accident on foot.  Many times, the owner of the vehicle claims the car was stolen, trying to avoid liability for the accident.  There are several insurance regulations which control situations like these.

If the police find the driver, he will be held accountable.  However, hiring a lawyer as early as possible is very important to make sure the owner of the car is held responsible as well.
