Multiple people hurt in Brooklyn crash; 9-year-old dies

According to police in Brooklyn, a 59-year-old man was driving westward on DeKalb Avenue when he was hit by another vehicle as he tried to execute a left turn onto Clermont Avenue. The collision, which occurred during the afternoon of Nov. 2, forced the man's Ford Explorer into a group of pedestrians nearby, resulting in the death of one child and the injury of two others. A woman was also injured in the accident. According to one witness, the driver of the Explorer may have been trying to avoid colliding with other vehicles during the accident.

A 9-year-old boy who was struck in the car accident was later pronounced dead at the scene. Media reports stated that a 47-year-old woman, a 10-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy all sustained noncritical injuries as well, and police said that they did not suspect either motorist of criminal actions and that both remained at the scene following the incident.

The family of the deceased child may wish to enlist an attorney and purse a wrongful death claim against the driver who started the crash. Wrongful death claims are lawsuits filed in civil courts that seek damages for the death of a family member.

While the financial impact of the death of an adult on a family can be calculated based on that person's current wages, determining the impact of the death of a child may require more estimation. The amount award by a jury is generally based on life and work expectancy for the child as well as the child's health and habits before he or she died. An attorney may be able to help a family estimate the amount of financial compensation that they can pursue and argue for that award in court.
