Gertrude Schnabel Maimed by Bus on Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills Highlights Pedestrian Safety Issues

An 84 year-old woman who was struck by an MTA bus in Forest Hills lost part of her leg and faces months of therapy after an accident that transit advocates say could have been avoided.

Gertrude Schnabel, a retired Woodhaven resident, went to a Forest Hills doctor's office on Wednesday, January 15, after which she decided to get a snack at her favorite store Gotta Getta Bagel on 71st Avenue.

She was crossing Queens Boulevard just before 10 a.m. when she was hit by a Q64 bus, which was making a right turn from 108th Street onto Queens Boulevard.

Schnabel, who was struck by the rear tire of the bus, was taken to Bellevue Hospital with serious foot and ankle injuries.

Since her accident, she has undergone two surgeries on her left leg which had to be amputated below the knee. She is also scheduled for surgery on her right ankle to insert screws.
