Bicyclist Killed By Hit-and Run Mercedes In East Harlem

Sergei Musatov, 42, an assistant professor of neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical Center, was killed in a hit-and-run car accident on 129th Street in East Harlem on Thursday.

Musatov was riding his bicycle when a speeding 2002 silver Mercedes sedan, which was fleeing authorities, rear-ended his bicycle and sent him flying into the sedan's windshield and onto the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet, according to authorities.

Moments before the fatal collision, the Mercedes had eluded court police which tried to pull the car over after it ran a red light near the Third Street Bridge in the Bronx. The officers were on a routine patrol of city courts when they noticed that the car had a broken window, sped through a traffic stop and nearly collide with another vehicle.

"They say they attempted to stop the vehicle after it dangerously went through a red light," David Bookstaver, a spokesman for New York State courts, said in a statement. "The vehicle fled."

The Mercedes continued to flee after the bicycle accident, hitting several construction barricades before the car turned onto Madison Avenue against street traffic and collided with a Volkswagen Golf on 128th Street.

The unidentified suspects, which include the driver and two passengers, ditched the car and fled the scene by foot. The suspects are still on the lam.
