Two Children Seriously Injured In Car Accidents Over Memorial Day Weekend

Two children were critically injured in separate car accidents over Memorial Day weekend.

Abriana Carrasco, 7, was leaving a barbecue on Sunday around 10 p.m., and was crossing the street when she was struck by a black Jeep Wrangler in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx.

Carrasco was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, where she was treated for two broken legs and a broken hip. She was listed in stable condition.

The driver of the hit-and-run was identified only as a woman, according to authorities. Police said the female driver slowed down after hitting the girl, but then quickly sped off. Police are still looking for the driver.

On the following day, Sincere Atkins, 8, was crossing the street mid-block from his grandmother's house in Queens when he was struck by a Toyota Corolla. The driver stayed at the scene on Sutphin Boulevard near 125th Avenue.

His older cousin told reporters that Atkins went to retrieve something from his grandmother's house. The boy was crossing the street to join him on the playground.

"I saw a little boy, lying on the street, his left leg was a full 45-degree angle from his body and his other leg was parallel to his body," DiMaggio Spencer, 43, who was in the park with his stepson, told the New York Daily News. "He had a laceration on his head and he had bit his tongue, he was bleeding from the mouth."

Atkins was listed in stable condition although he will be undergoing some x-rays.

Witnesses said there were multiple signs displaying the 25 mph speed limit.
