Worker Falls To Death At Hotel Construction Site

A 25-year-old construction worker on the construction site of a Midtown Manhattan luxury hotel fell to his death down an elevator shaft on Tuesday afternoon.

Christian Gisci of Jersey City was working on the 24th floor of the Riu Plaza Times Square, located at 301 West 46th Street, when he fell hundreds of feet down an elevator shaft. Gisci was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead, police confirmed.

Construction on the 30-story, 300,000 square foot hotel was ordered to a halt after complaints of an unsafe work environment back in July 2013. According to reports, there were several problems with the inspection, including failure to install rails around floor openings.

The property is owned by Majorca-based RIU Hotel & Resorts, and the builder is the Rinaldi Group. A lawyer for the company said it was cooperating with the authorities, according to reports.
