One Dead, One Hurt After Small Plane Crashes Onto Train Tracks

A pilot of a single-engine plane was killed and his passenger was injured after their plane crashed onto the Long Island Railroad tracks on South Oyster Bay Road in Hicksville on Sunday morning, according to reports.

The Hawker Beechcraft BE35 was headed to Morristown, NJ from Westhampton when the pilot, who has not been identified, told the control tower at Republic Airport in East Farmingdale that the plane was having difficulties and asked to return to Gabreski Airport, the plane's point of origination, authorities said.

The plane rapidly lost altitude and attempted to land on the tracks, witnesses said. "The plane hit some trees, and had engine trouble and lost control, and came in sideways," Edward Sanders, 56, a witness told the New York Post. "He was trying to use the track as a runway but came in a little too low and hit the crossing pole."

Carl Giordano, 55, of New Vernon, NJ, was the passenger on the plane and had ejected just 20 feet before the plane hit the ground. The plane had exploded upon impact, witnesses said. The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene.

Giordano was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center where he is in serious condition. He was being treated for a broken jaw and other injuries, but is expected to survive, according to reports.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
