Driver In Fatal S.I. Crash Faces Drug Possession Charges

The driver of a car involved in a fatal crash in Staten Island was charged with criminal drug and driving counts, police said. Angel Ortiz, 25, of Meiers Corners, who had a previous criminal record, has been charged with two counts of criminal possession of controlled substance and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

On Monday, Ortiz was involved in a two-car crash on Hylan Boulevard and Old Town Road that claimed the life of one man, and injured three others including himself. Ortiz was driving south on Hylan Boulevard when a Hyundai Elantra driven by an 88-year-old woman made a left turn onto Old Town Road and the cars collided. The collision caused Ortiz's vehicle to slam into a utility pole.

Ortiz's front seat passenger, Vincent Sugrue, 32, of Mariners Harbor, was found unconscious and unresponsive in the vehicle. Emergency responders rushed him to Staten Island University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Ortiz was listed in critical condition after suffering trauma to his head and body. An 18-year-old female passenger in the rear seat of his car and the driver of the Hyundai were also treated for injuries at Staten Island University Hospital. Both women were in stable condition.

Police found 14 bags of crack cocaine in his Ortiz's car during their inspection after the crash. Prior to the incident, Ortiz was arrested and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle in March. He had at least one other arrest for motor vehicle charges and at least three arrests for criminal possession of marijuana, in addition to sealed arrests, officials said.
