Hit-and-Run MTA Bus Fatally Strikes Woman In Brooklyn

A Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus fatally struck a woman as she was crossing the street in Brooklyn on Tuesday morning, according to various reports. Carol Bell, 70, was crossing the street with her walker at Fulton Street near Sackman Street in Ocean Hill when a B15 bus, made a left-turn and hit her head-on.

The driver, Paul Roper, 48, stopped the bus briefly but continued driving, according to witnesses and surveillance video of the scene.

Bell was pronounced dead at the scene. A crumpled broken walkway was on the street as investigators cordoned off the area.

"I saw her on the ground," said Deborah Robinson, 58, who shared a room with Bell at a homeless shelter close to the accident. "Her legs were gone. There was only the top half of her body."

Roper, a 15-year MTA veteran, returned the bus to the East New York depot and apparently never reported the incident, officials said.

"He just kept going," passerby Ramon Garcia told reporters. "He never realized what had happened. It's a big machine. I guess you don't feel something like that."

Roper was charged Tuesday with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to yield to a pedestrian and exercise due care. The MTA suspended him without pay. He could face up to seven years in prison.
