Swerving Car Kills 1 Woman, Injures 4 Pedestrians In Brooklyn

A female pedestrian was killed after she was struck by a car that swerved onto a Brooklyn curb on Sunday evening, officials said. Victoria Nicodemus, 30, of Brooklyn Heights, was mortally wounded from the car accident. Four other pedestrians, including Nicodemus' boyfriend, were also injured.

Marlon Sewell, 39, of Brooklyn, was the driver of a Chevy Suburban involved in the fatal car crash. He was driving southeast on Fulton Street near South Portland Avenue when he made a last-second maneuver to avoid hitting a bus that pulled into a stop in front of him.

His car jumped the curb and struck the couple on a crowded commercial block, officials said.

Nicodemus was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital Center, but she could not be saved. Her boyfriend was treated for minor injuries and was released from the same hospital, her family said.

Three others were hospitalized with minor injuries, according to fire officials.

Sewell, along with his female passenger, remained on the scene of the crash. He was arrested for the unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, police said. No charges have been made yet regarding the accident. Police are still investigating.
