Woman Struck and Killed After Surviving Car Wreck In L.I.

Brittany Leith, 25, of North Babylon was struck and killed by a car on the Southern State Parkway after she survived a car crash and returned to the car to retrieve her belongings, officials said.

At around 4 a.m., Leith collided into the center median of the Southern State Parkway near Exit 36, which caused her car to flip over. She was able to climb out of the car through a cracked window and the help of passersby.

She made it safely to the shoulder of the road, however, Leith decided to return to her car to get her belongings before authorities arrived and "despite warnings from the motorists who had assisted her," Newsday reported. While she gathered her belongings, she was struck by a passing driver.

When police arrived at the scene, a state police vehicle was struck from behind by an SUV. The officer was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. His condition was unknown.

It was unclear whether both the hit-and-run drivers stayed at the scene or left. No charges have been filed as of yet. The investigation is still ongoing.
