Man Fatally Crushed By LES Elevator After Rescuing Woman

Stephen Hewett-Brown, 25, was killed by a faulty elevator on the Lower East Side after he pushed a woman out of harm's way, witnesses said. The accident happened in the elevator at 131 Broome Street at around 11:45 p.m.

Hewett-Brown was inside the elevator when tenant Erudi Sanchez, 43, and her 10-year-old nephew stepped inside to throw out the trash at around 11:45 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

"When I got into the elevator, I felt it dropping and I thought my feet would get caught in the gap, but the man pushed me out and said, 'Happy New Year,'" Sanchez told the New York Post on Friday.

Yet the malfunctioning elevator dropped farther with Brown's body caught between the elevator and the third floor, Sanchez said.

"I saw he was trapped and the elevator was crushing him. It was awful," she said.

Sanchez's son-in-law Emanuel Coronado, 23, tried to pull Brown out, however, the weight of the elevator was too heavy.

"To me, he is a hero. My mother-in-law might not be alive right now," Coronado said.

Sanchez has experienced issues with the elevators before. She recalled getting stuck inside the elevator and pressing the alarm button two months ago.
