Woman Critically Injured In Grand Central Parkway Chain Reaction Crash

Victoria Garrett, 22, was in critical condition after she was struck in a chain-reaction crash caused by an off-duty NYPD lieutenant, according to reports.

Her friend Samantha Maloney, 22, of Lindhurst, initially crashed her 2014 Nissan into a divider on an elevated section of the Whitestone near the intersection with the Grand Central Parkway, police said. Maloney was allegedly drunk during the single-car accident.

She pulled over and called Garrett for help. Garrett came to her aid and pulled up behind Maloney's vehicle. Both of the women got out of their vehicles to inspect Maloney's car, police said. As the two were inspecting the car, Christopher Pierce, an off-duty EMT pulled over and offered help.

However, a 38-year-old police lieutenant, whose identity has not been released, slammed his 2016 Jeep Cherokee into the parked cars.

One of the vehicles hit Garrett and sent her flying 30-feet over the side of the elevated roadway, police said. Garrett was taken to the New York Presbyterian Hospital in Queens and is listed in serious condition, police said.

Pierce suffered from an arm fracture, while the NYPD lieutenant was treated for minor injuries. Both were taken to New York Presbyterian. Maloney was uninjured from the accident.

Maloney was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. No charges are expected against the NYPD lieutenant.
