Man Fatally Crushed By Manhattan Store Elevator

A man was killed after being crushed between a Manhattan store's supply elevator and the first floor in Washington Heights, officials said.

Jose Fernandez, 43, was a worker at La Reguera Dominican on West 182nd Street when he was loading merchandise onto the store's elevator. According to officials, the elevator started to move upward and pinned him to the ceiling.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no record of the elevator at the address listed, according to the Buildings Department website. An elevator constructor from Elevator Constructors Union Local 1 said that the elevator may have been installed by unlicensed workers, according to the New York Daily News.

For grieving families, it's important that a full investigation be conducted. For that, a wise first step is to discuss the matter with a legal professional experienced in premises liability accidents.
