Thirteen Hurt In Tour Bus Accident Near Central Park

Thirteen people were injured after a double-decker tour bus drove off the roadway and slammed into a tree on the eastern edge of Central Park, officials said. The incident happened at 1:14 p.m. at Fifth Avenue and East 63rd Street.

Two tourists, a 70-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman, were treated for head injuries and were expected to survive. They were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Other victims were taken to Lenox Hill Hospital.

The tour bus driver told police that he was driving southbound along Fifth Avenue when a taxi cut him off. He swerved to avoid the cab, but the bus mounted the sidewalk and struck a tree.

However, some witnesses disputed the bus driver's claims. One witness said that the tour bus swerved to avoid a city bus stopped for passengers, not a cab.
