Passenger Killed After LI Car Crash

Brandee Griffin, 33, was killed after her car crashed in Freeport, Long Island, officials said. Driver William Billups, 45, of Hempstead, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, third-degree assault and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

Griffin was a passenger in the 2001 Buick when the car struck a 2012 Mercedes Benz on Rutland Road and East Seaman Avenue.

According to officials, Billups' vehicle was seen speeding on Roosevelt Avenue by two plainclothes officers. Billups pulled the car over at Independence and North Main Street, but when officers approached, he drove off. Moments later, the officials said they heard a crash.

Billups had allegedly blown through a stop sign at the intersection when the accident occurred, officials said.

Griffin was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. Billups was treated for a broken leg and head trauma. The Mercedes' driver, Argenis Tavares, 24, was also taken to the hospital and treated for a broken jaw.
