LI Woman Injured After Being Pulled From Car Wreck

Melissa Ortiz, 36, of Yaphank, was pulled out of her burning vehicle after a National Grid truck collided with her sports utility vehicle, officials said.

The accident happened on the Long Island Expressway near Exit 60 in Ronkonkoma. The collision occurred in the eastbound lanes and resulted in the SUV flipping over and catching fire.

Two off-duty officers, Thomas Mutarelli, a highway patrol officer and Jeffrey Dupoux, a firefighter, arrived at the scene of the crash in separate vehicles, officials said. The officers managed to pull Ortiz from the burning car out of a passenger window.

Ortiz and the truck's driver, Frederick Foote, were transported to Stony Brook Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries, officials said.
