Here's how commercial construction workers are often injured

Do you live in New York City? Do you work in the Big Apple? If so, you know one thing to be true: You don't have to look far to find a construction site.

As a commercial construction worker, there is nothing better than the thought of doing your part in completing a project. However, there may be something else on your mind: the risk of injury.

Commercial construction sites are not the safest work environment. Even though employees and employers do their part in keeping job sites safe, there is no guarantee that an accident will never occur. In fact, this remains commonplace in New York City.

Here are some of the most common reasons for a commercial construction accident:

  • Slip-and-fall. A worker could slip and fall on the ground or when working at height. Either way, the end result could be a serious injury, such as a broken bone or concussion.
  • Falling objects. Even with safety measures in place, there are times when objects fall from height. If the object strikes a worker below, the person could suffer a serious head, neck, or brain injury.
  • Machinery related accidents. In today's construction industry, many types of equipment are used to improve speed and efficiency. Unfortunately, when not used in the appropriate manner, this machinery can lead to an accident.
  • Fires and explosions. A fire or explosion can happen for any reason, such as an electrical mix-up. If this occurs when workers are in close proximity, burns and other injuries are common.

These are not the only causes of construction site accidents, but they are definitely among the most common.

If you're put in this unfortunate position, here are the three things you need to do:

  • Seek medical attention.
  • Report the accident to your employer.
  • Review the details of the accident (once you are able to do so).

All three points are important, with the third one potentially leading you to receive compensation for your injuries and other damages.

The best thing you can do is take steps to prevent an accident. If this doesn't work, your health comes first. From there, you'll want to learn more about your legal rights and who was responsible for causing the accident.
